Raccoons

Our cheerful bunch of eight raccoons belongs to the Fundacja Instytut Empatii (Empathy Institute Foundation), which ran the sanctuary in Musuły before us. Because raccoons are an invasive species in Europe, they are staying in our care until a suitable aviary is ready for them at the new Pegasus Shelter site… or until they are legally allowed to stay with us for ever!

Our part of the cost of keeping the raccoons covers their daily care, looking after the grounds, environmental enrichment and part of their food.

Raccoons are omnivores who need plenty of insects, a good amount of meat and vegetables, and extras such as fruit, nuts and eggs.

Raccoons

Cmoczyca

spayed female

A raccoon legend! Nobody remembers where this name came from any more, not even the volunteers who made it up. Calm and unobtrusive, like the whole gang – mostly interested in food.

Dzikusek

neutered male

The one who sits in the little house. A shy one. You have to leave food out for him, because he rarely dines with people around. He watches everything from his hiding place – rumour has it he’s writing a raccoon chronicle.

Kruszynka

spayed female

Sociable, but she chooses her own moments for cuddles – like a cat.
She is tiny and loves sleeping “spooned”. Gentler when searching pockets, but she always senses there’s something in there.

Pixar

neutered male

If you have food, he’ll climb up your legs without a second thought. A pocket detective, happy to be stroked, but picked up? Better not try.

Płaczi

neutered male

The biggest and roundest of them all, with a short tail. He has an obvious talent for storing fat, even though he eats the same as the rest of the gang. His name (from the Polish for “crying”) comes from his behaviour – he picks on the other raccoons, and when he gets what’s coming to him… he cries (literally!).
Loves a cuddle.

SiurSiur

neutered male

The most sociable of all the raccoons. He loves electronics, games involving teeth, and foot and tummy massages. A true pickpocket!

Stitch

neutered male

A little raccoon similar to Kruszynka, with dark colouring and a spot on his muzzle. Sociable, but only when he feels like it. Often up to something in the corners. Another pickpocket!

Truskawka

spayed female

With a white spot on her lips, lighter than the others, with paws that turn outwards. A super-sweet princess – she comes over with interest when she smells food, but lets only a chosen few stroke her. No picking her up! She often chills by the paddling pool like a spa star.

🦝 All the raccoons have one thing in common – their appetite and love of food.

Unfortunately, they also tend to put on weight, so trying to win their favour with illegal snacks is punishable by… cleaning duty at the raccoon dogs’ enclosure!
